Review Fujifilm XT-4 - A Great All-Rounder?

Pros:

  1. This camera has almost every modern feature imaginable- just to name a few: In body image stabilization, tilt/flip screen for vari-angle shooting, fast and accurate autofocus, 10 frames per second shooting, 4K video up to 60 frames per second, Wifi and Bluetooth wireless connectivity, dual SD card slots and much more.

  2. The body is weather sealed and built to withstand a lot of use, at least 300,000 images.

  3. The styling of the camera is great and if you like analogue control dials instead of scroll wheels you’ll really enjoying using this camera.

  4. A great lens line- there’s pretty much a great option for any type, style of shooting you like to do.

  5. Battery life is excellent.

  6. The prices for the system give you some of the best price to performance on the market.

Cons:

  1. The lens lineup is excellent in performance and value but with Fuji you are stuck with their lenses for the most part since there aren’t as many third party options. (There are some but many don’t have autofocus)

  2. The autofocus for sports is a bit complicated and not always 100% reliable. It is fast, but the lens and settings you use will play a big roll in your success rate which makes it, on the whole, a bit too complicated.

  3. The body looks very retro cool but it’s a bit small and not especially ergonomic. You might love it but it doesn’t fit like it’s molded to your hand like some other cameras.

My advice for a killer kit -

  1. Fujifilm XT4 - $1699 - For a parent this is a purchase you make once every 5-7 years so I picked a camera with features that should stand up over time.

  2. Fujifilm 50-140mm f2.8 lens $1199 - This is an expensive lens and a purchase you should only have to make once. Buy it and you’ll be thanking yourself when you want great sports, recital, graduation, theatre images.

  3. Fujifilm 16-80mm $599 - Your general purpose lens for anything that happens in good light. Use it mostly outdoors or with flash and you’ll love it’s performance.

  4. Fujilm 35mm f2 - $399 - Your indoors/night lens for general purpose uses. Great for birthday parties, portraits, or really anytime. This is a prime lens, so no zoom, but it let’s in so much light that it’s the perfect counterpoint to your every zoom.

Verdict - If you’re looking for a camera that you can live with for a long time that really hits a wonderful balance of features, price, and performance the FujiFilm Xt4 is hard to beat. For my professional work and my personal projects it’s been a wonderful tool. The lens lineup is full featured from ultra wide angle out to super-telephoto and best of all almost everything is priced really well. Bottom line- if you’re looking for a modern camera system and your budget isn’t set for the top end of the market, this is a great all-rounder you can love for years and years.
